Why Another Project Management Blog?

December 27, 2016 by Alvin Lewis Leave a Comment

Hand Tools as a Metaphor for Project Management and Software EngineeringThere are so many project management blogs on the internet; from the big boys like Project Smart and Project-Management.com to pithy focused offering likes The Tao of PM or the entertaining Herding Cats site. So, another one! What a waste of time. Why bother! That is certainly what we asked ourselves taking on the effort to create this site and the volume of care and feeding it will require.
So what is the gap? The PointProx.com site will be particularly concerned with project management in the information technology space with a particular emphasis on software development. The main reason is that software project management is what we at Point Prox know how to do and what we are good at.
Certainly, software project management is one of the most challenged applications of project management practices and therefore most in need of exploration, examination, and elucidation. We will attempt to aid in this effort by providing both theory of processes and discussions on hands-on practices to make your project management efforts more successful.

Still, doesn’t answer your question, does it?

OK, here we go: Despite the wealth of information concerning project management available on the internet, what is in short supply is a site aimed at both what and how to actually do software project management, that is both theory and practice of software project management. PointProx.com will be concerned with project management skills, project management process, and the reasons behind them. That is, not just what you as a project manager should do, but also how to put your hands on the tools and get the job done. There is so much on the web that discusses theory and management techniques, and so much out there that explains how to do specific tasks, but little that combines why you would do something with how to do it. We hope that PointProx.com will fill that gap.

What can you expect from PointProx.com?

So how are we going to present all this great information? There will be a mix of information presentation formats. First, and most frequent, will be short blog posts. These will be concentrated on a very specific part of the practice of software project management. Posts will also point you to resources to expand your knowledge of the subject discussed.
Next, there will be the Point Prox Video Series. The series will be particularly focused on demonstration videos and discussions towards the accomplishment of specific tasks using automation and productivity tools. Videos will provide hands-on explorations of doing project management along with discussions of why you are doing them. We hope that these will be both informative and entertaining.
Templates and other documents formats will be supplied to help you to collect the complete and correct information needed to perform software project management correctly. The templates will be downloadable, in native file formats, so that you can adapt them to your own needs without all that pesky typing and reformatting.
Finally, we will have reviews of books and tools for software project management. These reviews will help you to expand your study of the subject of project management and to learn about useful ways to increase your efficiency as a project manager.

You can participate too!

Like what you see, have an idea for how the ideas can be more effectively presented, did we get something wrong, just have something on your mind? If you will have an opportunity to join in the conversation via moderated comments. Do you have an idea that you would like to see on PoingProx.com? Send us a note on your insight. If you find the posts useful then tell your friends and associates all about us at the office or on social media. The more the merrier.

The bottom line is this:

We will be exploring use of tools, techniques, and disciplined practices in service of software project management. Do you want to know the theories of software scheduling and learn how to actually do it in practice? We’ll go over that. How about incorporating stakeholder management into your MS Project files so that roles and responsibilities will be more complete. Yep that too. The point is this, we’ll discuss not just the theory of project management but display how to actually do it.

Hope you like it.
